What Should You Expect in HR in 2024?

As 2023 wraps up, all eyes are focused on what is to come in 2024. One of the most important steps to take as an HR manager is to ensure that you are staying up-to-date on the latest HR trends because most common trends help you to save time or money. From the continuation of remote work to the boom of artificial intelligence, 2023 opened the doors for some questions to be answered in 2024. So, what exactly should you expect in HR in 2024?

We are Noverant, a turn-key learning management platform, and today’s article will be answering that question.

A Return to the Office

Remote work has been a possibility for decades now. Many companies that worked in-person in offices even used to offer a hybrid work model where employees would get a certain number of work-from-home (WFH) days each week or month, with the rest of the days being spent in the office. When COVID hit in 2020, thousands of businesses were forced to go fully remote. As time passed in 2021 and 2022 and it became safe to return to the office again, many companies decided not to go back. If they had proven that they could operate fully remotely, why go back into an office with the rent, utilities, maintenance, equipment, and other expenses required to do so?

While that was the mindset for a while, in the post-pandemic world we are being reminded of the benefits of going into the office and the importance of in-person human interaction. Companies want to return to the fundamentals of business, which will require a return to office (RTO).

Culture and Environment

With the disconnect from a fully-remote environment to the unrelenting force of inflation, employee morale is low across the board. Considering that, employers are stressing an importance on company culture and a human-centric work environment now more than ever. With a RTO, many employers are creating flexible office spaces since a flexible workspace is more motivating for employees and increases productivity.

Culturally, this looks like the company prioritizing creativity and empathy, spotlighting employee accomplishments and thanking them for the work they do for the company. It also means that the company is being transparent about their company-wide communications, which helps to build trust between employees and the employer.

Environmentally, this looks like creating a space that workers would want to return to. Create centralized workstations, open layouts, comfortable furniture, communal spaces, and nice kitchens that make employees feel comfortable at the office. Flexible workspaces make people want to commute to the office.

A Focus on Artificial Intelligence

Arguably the biggest takeaway from 2023 was the surge of artificial intelligence. AI tools such as content generators were emerging across the globe with the ability to create art, write, make music, and perform a number of other tasks. In 2024, AI will play a big role in HR with its ability to streamline many of the menial, time consuming tasks that currently sit on the plate of HR. These AI tools can help scan resumes, can simplify the onboarding and offboarding process, can generate surveys to increase employee engagement, help give more accurate performance reviews with numbers, and can even act as a virtual assistant to answer questions. HR managers should not see AI as a threat to what they do, but as a useful resource that they can use to save time and increase their own efficiency.
